Rideau Canal is a World Heritage

The Rideau Canal is the newest Canadian site to be added to UNESCO's World Heritage List, making fourteen the number of Canadian World Heritage sites which include old Quebec City and a slew of national parks. The Canal is 202 km long, going from from Kingston to Ottawa, and the 19th century North American canal to remain operational along its original line with most of its original structures, including towers and other fortifications, intact.

Other additions this year include the Sydney Opera House; the Red Fort in New Delhi; Bordeaux, France; Samarra, Iraq; and the old town of Corfu, Greece. And, for the first time, a site was removed from the list. The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman (added in 1994), was removed because Oman has failed to conserve the site as a sanctuary for the rare animals, deciding to reduce its size by 90% and to use it for fossil fuel prospection.
