And now for Waterloo
The city of Waterloo has been named one of the world's Top Seven Intelligent Communities, and is in the running for the Intelligent Community of the Year, 'an honour that recognizes the community that best exemplifies the development of a prosperous economy based on broadband and information technology'.
Some of the organizations that helped Waterloo land this nomination include
- The University of Waterloo (but of course)
- UW's Institute for Quantum Computing, and Research and Technology Park
- Waterloo-based leading tech companies like RIM, OpenText and Sybase
- The groundbreaking Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, 'a community of theoretical physicists dedicated to extending theories of space, time and matter'
- Centre for International Governance Innovation, an up and coming think tank that explores innovative solutions to global governance issues.
I guess we could say this is an indictation of Waterloo's own renaissance, one of information and technology.

I have to admit, that's a nice photo. But I don't like the fact that the placing of intelligence is based on technology, rather than ideas.
Agreed with Salman that the appropriation of the word intelligence to mean technology is bothersome. But then again, the organization that did the selection had as its criteria, "the development of a prosperous economy based on broadband and information technology."
Odd that that's what intelligence gets reduced to. But a more comprehensive definition would probably automatically favour big cities (Boston comes to mind) over tiny ones like Waterloo, so take your victories where you can get them.
